The World Is a Stage - 1/12 - Webseries & Power Augusto Boal (16 March 1931 - 2 May 2009) was a Brazilian theatre director, writer and politician. He was the founder of Theatre of the Oppressed, a theatrical form originally used in radical popular education movements. Boal served one term as a vereador (the Brazilian equivalent of a city councillor) in Rio de Janeiro from 1993 to 1997, where he developed legislative theatre.[1]
The Theatre of the Oppressed describes a range of theatrical forms that the Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal first elaborated in the 1960s, initially in Brazil and later in Europe. Boal was influenced by the work of the educator and theorist Paulo Freire. Boal's techniques use theatre as means of knowledge and transformation of reality in the social and relational field. In the Theatre of the Oppressed, the audience becomes active, such that as "spect-actors" they explore, show, analyze and transform the reality in which they are living.

OVERVIEW: The World is a Stage
We looked at the intorduction of "Theater of the Oppressed" by Augusto Boal. We discussed whether or not politics and theater were separate. Our discussion led to looking at the racial politics behind the Academy Awards and the media's portrayal of Whitney Houston's death, and Lebron James' trade to the Miami Heat. We also looked at the theater of political campaigns. OVERVIEW: Gentrifying Latino Images Guest Julia Ahumada Grob, producer and actor on the webseries, East WillyB, was our guest instructor. The class began with a reflection on films, movies, and television shows that impacted their own lives. Then they looked at an article critiquing the portrayal of Latinos in a network television show. Then they looked at several examples of Web Series. The discussion led to conversations of authenticity and stereotypes. REFLECTION: Theater in the Everyday Capture a moment of theater in the everyday. It could be a workplace drama, a ride on the elevator, or a political campaign. What role is power playing? Who are the characters? What stories are they living out? |
